How Would The Sinners Universe Expand: Sequel, Prequel, Or Spinoff ?
We are witnessing the building of a franchise.
The world has been captivated by Sinners and are already craving more after the watching the film multiple times. We know that Sinners has the franchise potential and with it’s already acclaimed success, an expansion of the franchise is sealed and delivered. This world Ryan Coogler has created has the possibilities to create not only expanded Black IP but also create more stories of people to be represented across multiple communities as we saw in the movie. Many people have already talked and posted about their ideas of possible prequels/sequels, some that are interesting while others are just seriously out of range of reality.
Now off rip, I know we would have a new cast of characters that would have to connect to the original story. But with the creative mind of Ryan Coogler, it can be done. Now here are my three possible ideas for an extended Sinners universe.
*This will include spoilers.*
The Moore Descendants Sequel That Tackles Generations and Rebrith
Now if we watched the movie, we know Sammie is the soul living survivor of the attack of Remmick and his legion of vampires. We know at the end of the movie, he becomes a famous blues player in Chicago in the 1990’s. We also know that Stack and Mary are still alive after getting away and have been wandering the world for sixty years at the time they see Sammie again. It’s safe to believe that Sammie went on to have his own family and by the time we get to a present day, he would have some great grandchildren. And we know good and well that Stack and Mary aren’t going to stay out of trouble, especially once Sammie passes on.
The film can tackle the subject of breaking generational trauma/curses and inheritance of gifts. Sammie had the gift of music so someone in his family would have that gene. Also tackling the subject of rebirth in the next life as a reward for what was done in the last. Sammie having a great-grandson that looks just like him, which would bring back Miles Caton. We could also have Delta Slim return to the living as a reward for dying a saint for sacrificing himself during the final battle. Him being a mentor for the reborn Sammie in the 2020’s. There’s also the possible arc of Smoke and Annie’s daughter being reborn but with the tragic arc of living without her parents the same as them without her in the 1930’s. Her living in Louisiana in search for her mother’s lineage and tapping into her Hoodoo heritage. These familial connections can have the family in three separate states in it’s own thin obtuse triangle and they’re brought together by what Stack and Mary are trying to conjure up.
The Choctaw Vampire Hunters Spinoff Series
One of biggest talking points surrounding Sinners is that the Choctaw vampire hunters should’ve gotten more screentime. Even though they served their purpose of the plot, I would definitely enjoy seeing a spinoff surrounding the Choctaw vampires and their community 1930’s and even the present. We of course will see them hunt down vampires the same way they were hunting Remmick in the film. Examining their legacy and history of the vampire hunters in the south.
Now if they do move forward, there needs to be Native American creatives involved beyond a consultation level. While it is possible to be accurate with research, there needs to be representation of the community behind the camera specifically.
A Twins Prequel But On The Page
The biggest demand for a prequel has been for a prequel about twins in Chicago and working for Al Capone. There’s also a want for more details regarding their father and how he possibly sold their soul. I think this can be done but I can see Coogler go the same route as Malcom D Lee and make it a prequel book. The book would focus on the story of the twins and their individual journeys but also some of their family history. Their father and Uncle Jim’s stories and how I went about the path of God and the other going to music and ended up allegedly selling his soul. It can also tell the story of their relationships with Annie and Mary and what happened that lead to their separations. We’d see their life in Chicago and their eventual plan to rob the Irish and Italians and getting their money to eventually go back to Mississippi. This would be able tell the story in a history book style kind of way rather than try to squish in the history of these two people in two hours or eight one-hour episodes.
Whatever direction Ryan Coogler and Proximity Media decide to go with, we will eat up whatever they give us. The people love Sinners and here to support this project become it’s own franchise.
