She Taught Love Is A Story Of Love Surviving Against Time
As a lover of Black Romance, any film that comes on my radar is added to my priority watch list. So when I saw the trailer for She Taught Love and it has Arsema Thomas from Queen Charlotte in it, I marked my calendar.
She Taught Love is a dramatic romance starring Arsema Thomas and Darrell Britt-Gibson. The story follows Britt-Gibson’s character who is a self-destructive actor who falls for Mali (Thomas), a sports agent he sees regularly at the local supermarket. The story shows their relationship form while Mali faces her own mortality as she deals with a chronic disease. The viewer sees the both of them learn to live and love in the moment. The chemistry they had on screen was phenomenal and the emotional performances from Arsema and Darrell had me holding back tears. The supporting cast also added to the story and how important they were in the lives of the central couple. My favorite being Mali’s father, Kevin, played by Edwin Lee Gibson. The love he has for his daughter and how dedicated his is to have her feel seen in her childhood was beautiful. The saying that the father sets the example of what love looks like for their children, specifically their daughters, rings so true with how Kevin supports and loves his daughter.
I also have to give Darrell Britt-Gibson additional flowers as he both starred in the film and wrote the screenplay. I need him to get into writing contemporary romance because this film gave straight from a romance novel. The way he was able to convey so many elements that made Frank and Mali’s story was amazing. This is why it’s important to invest in original ideas from writers, especially when the industry is in this current franchise sequel era.
I highly recommend you watch this film as it is a potential Black romance cinephile for this generation, which is not an over-exaggeration. “She Taught Love” is now streaming on Hulu and playing in select theaters.
